Introduction

MindFire is a marketing platform company, providing its customers with solutions hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), utilizing SQL databases housed on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) with Amazon Elastic Block Storage (Amazon EBS) volumes. They have multiple databases containing terabytes of data. Cloudify collected data on the backup windows and restoration duration requirements associated with the file restores and disaster recovery time objectives (RTO’s) and recovery point objectives (RPO’s).

Solutions, Deliverable, Recommended AWS Best Practices, and Costs savings

Cloudify gathered and analyzed MindFire’s database backup needs and requirements by gathering database names, calculating total storage size and object count and assessing the frequency daily, weekly, and monthly backups over time. This study identified databases with low and high priorities for the business. Cloudify collected data on the restoration requirements associated with the databases and DR RTO’s and RPO’s. Security and performance are always examined and are optimized by using AWS best practices in IAM set up and security. Cloudify examines processes to evaluate data transfer for optimal performance. This can include recommending AWS Direct Connect, a dedicated line, or private network connection. By providing alternative bandwidth, lower latency, and enhanced security, AWS Direct Connect can significantly improve data transfer performance and reliability. Cloudify carefully evaluate customer needs to determine if AWS Direct Connect is the optimal solution, considering factors such as data transfer meeting the clients’ requirements, and security posture. Our team provided expert guidance and support for configuring and setting up optimal and complete set of backups for all data. MindFire accepted our solutions, and it was implemented.

Cloudify examined the requirements of the clients for backup and restore needs. We gathered information regarding the use of third-party tools, or all tools used for these purposes. Resource optimization: Cloudify regularly review database backup and restoration usage patterns of MindFire during Well-Architected reviews. Cloudify identifies underutilized resources or inefficient configurations. By optimizing resource allocation and implementing best practices, MindFire/Cloudify can reduce costs without compromising performance. Lifecycle management: Cloudify leverage database backup and restoration to automatically transition data to needed database backups (e.g., All data that is required to operate the business) and if it is no longer actively used. This helps minimize costs while ensuring data availability.

Cloudify employs a comprehensive methodology, planning, approach, and AWS calculator costs analysis to ensure that all Backups capacity aligns closely with Clients’ requirements, avoiding both underutilization, overutilization, time to recovery according to the clients’ RTOs and RPOs and optimized costs. Cloudify meticulously analyzed requirements for Restoration and historical data usage patterns to identify trends, peak usage periods, and average consumption rates. This data-driven approach provides valuable insights for Backup and Restoration capacity planning. Capacity planning recommendations were provided to MindFire and accepted and implemented. Cloudify provides solutions for Backup and Restoration deployment to our client with the optimized costs and best choices in terms of resources to get best performance with minimum cost.

Metrics

Cloudify establishes regular cadence, as we do for all our clients, to review internal performance and identify opportunities for costs and optimization within our clients’ Backups and Restoration platforms. This includes conducting periodic reviews of completeness of backups, billing data, analyzing resource utilization, and identifying potential inefficiencies via our extensive use of AI based tools. By implementing AWS Backup Cloudify was able to help MindFire backup all data with confidence and reduce their operational backup windows daily, weekly, and monthly. Mindfire was also able to achieve 25% cost savings.
